A small Israeli startup has just developed a barely larger than a USB scanner that analyzes through its smartphone objects, foods or textiles.
SCIO is the name of the handheld scanner developed by the Israeli company Consumer Physics. With this scanner, users will be able to analyze the molecular structure of the world around them, to know what makes this jacket is that this dish contains or what material is such an object.
Scio: a molecular scanner that fits in the palm of the hand
This mini-scanner, called Scio (learn Latin) is intended for the general public and has been marketed since August by Israeli society Consumer Physics, located in Hod Hasharon near Tel Aviv. Dror Sharon, co-founder of the company calls it "personal laboratory in the pocket".
SCIO will scan the products by sending a said beam "near infrared" to react the molecules to light. The scanner is then able to decrypt each molecule and detects chemical properties such as sugar, fat or humidity. It then determines the object, the food material, etc. scanned, using an Internet database. This information is then displayed in an application installed on a smartphone. And SCIO will be perfectly able to determine if a tomato is ripe or not, for example but not necessarily work at present on more complex food such as lasagna. A participatory financing
Israeli society has been able to develop this project thanks in part to the public in 2014 by launching a fundraising campaign in which 13,000 people took part in height of 200 dollars each.
