To simplify the control procedure of treatment against cancer in patients, researchers have developed a mini-sensor that will be implanted directly into the tumor.
The treatment suffered by patients to fight cancer are heavy and they must suffer more to make the monitoring of these treatments. American researchers have managed to create a mini-sensor, implanted directly into the tumor, doctors will provide information on the development of cancer in real time.
A biosensor to monitor cancer
A team of researchers from the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT, Boston, USA, led by Professor Michael Cima, has developed a biosensor that will avoid biopsies of cancer patients and MRI repeat.
This small wireless sensor that measures no more than 2 mm is equipped with a circuit which retrieves data on the tumor where it is directly implanted during a biopsy and sends them to a receiver. Using a software in which the data are processed, the doctors who follow the patient can then monitor the success or failure of a real-time processing and adjust if necessary with greater responsiveness.
This device will allow a more accurate monitoring and therefore, support the earlier disease. "Instead of waiting months to see if the tumor decreases, you can quickly get information to see if you are going in the right direction," explained Professor Michael Cima in the press release from MIT.
Two parameters are measured
The biosensor is able to measure two parameters of the tumor: the oxygen concentration and acidity. By measuring the acidity of the tumor it is possible to deduce the efficacy of a treatment. If the tumor becomes acidic, it is a sign that the treatment is working. It is the same if the level of oxygen dissolved in the tumor increases.
Tested on mice for several weeks, it turns out that this system works quite well: the collected data were similar to those obtained by more traditional methods. While these first results are very encouraging, it will still test its effectiveness in humans before seeing this system in hospitals.
